St Johns Arsenal Deaf Football Club

A Step Back In Time

St John has a real sense of pride in our long (and often distinguished!) history. The St John of Beverly Deaf Club was established in 1913 on Green lanes. The earliest photo we have of the team is the 1948/49 team, of which a few are still around and members of the late deaf club. With the recent troubles suffered by the deaf club a huge amount of football memorabilia and trophies have been sadly lost for good. But memories are strong and we are in the process of documenting these for future generations to enjoy. We await these tales with relish! The 1948 St John team were dressed in a very heavy black and red checked football kit, which we can no longer find to our disappointment. This was also the first St John team after the 2nd World War due to the heavy bombing and evacuees. During the 1950′s St John FC played mainly against other Deaf teams in the FLDC (federation of London Deaf Clubs) league, which had approximately 10 teams. St John at that time had a strong rivalry with Lewisham Deaf FC who was one of the strongest teams in the FDLC along with Clapham.
