REPORT: Walker Netball Tournament 2009

SATURDAY 29th AUGUST 2009

@ The Walker Ground, Waterfall Road, Southgate, London, N14 7JZ

A fantastic sunny day at The Walker Ground welcomed over 50 to 60 netball players / umpires / spectators for the first full use of their 2 new resurfaced netball courts for the first annual Walker Netball Rally.

Even though there was insufficient juniors to run the separate Walker Junior Tournament this year – many juniors joined the adult teams and enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and experience with their club team mates in the Main Walker Cup.

Oakwood Dolly Mixtures fielded not only a Mother and Daughter duo – but also Grandmother and Grand daughter too! They had plenty of support from their main Oakwood team on the sidelines.

Other teams from in and around London enjoyed the playing surface –  with games played on a league basis, followed by placing play-offs – culminating with semi finals between Oakwood and Pink Ladies plus Minchenden and Falcons.

Finalists Oakwood and Falcons had a very close deciding match with only one goal separating them during most of the game. Final score 9-8 to Falcons.

Thanks to all the teams, players, umpires, captains and spectators – hope to see you all next year. Keep watching www.thewalkerground.co.uk for all event details. Contact Lynda.Colt@thewalkerground.co.uk for hiring details.

There was the opportunity for non-club / new prospective players to come and Have a Go at Netball – whether they used to play or just fancied Giving it a Go. Several girls / ladies have been signed up for the Enfield Council Back To Netball courses – refer to Jan.Hickman@enfield.gov.uk for more details.

Thanks to England Netball for supplying raffle prizes which included Netball World Series Tickets and official Netballs – won by Minchenden and Old Fincunions players. Walker Ground Trustees and Southgate Squash & Racketball Club donated prizes which were won by 2 of the ‘Back to Netball’ Ladies.

The Walker Ground – Tennis/Netball Court Project – would like to thank Palmers Green High School, Arthur Ashby Foundation, private donator and members of the Weld Tennis club – as well as Enfield Youth Opportunity Fund – refer to Pink.Ross@enfield.gov.uk for your chance of funding.
