July 2008: ‘Walker 5-Aside Football Tournament’

More teams entered this tournament with home grown Southgate Squash (Football) lads defending their title from 2007. Home club Oakhill Tigers entered a Vets team mainly from the Dad’s of their junior teams.

A main Cup Tournament for the ‘experienced’ players and a Trophy Tournament for the ‘Fun but still competitive’ players played over 2 days was extremely successful. Rain had threatened but cleared just in time for the many teams and players who entered.

The introduction of this tournament has encouraged teams to play on the fantastic surfaces – right over the outfields often frequented by Middlesex County Cricketers and their top level opponents. Thanks to Head Groundsman Steve Martin.

6th July 2008: ‘Walker Ground Music Day’

An afternoon open air music concert and picnic on Sunday 6th July 2008, featured a wide range of local musical talent. Gates were open at 2 PM with music from 4 PM until 8 PM.

This was a new and exciting Walker Ground social event that we hoped will be the first of an annual calendar entry showcasing the best of local talent – a programme of music and entertainment for a family picnic day out. In addition to the music, there were rides, stalls and entertainment for children with a wide variety of food and drink available.

This annual event is aimed at the family and most definitely not “Southgate’s answer to Glastonbury”.

The only similarity was the weather which was very unkind to the attendees

Local acts appeared:

Glen Howe – performing in a swing style – including an impromptu – Singing in the Rain !

Southgate Symphony Orchestra – a 40 piece orchestra performing popular classics, including Peter and the Wolf

Emerald Irish Dancers – an award winning dance troop

Angels Bollywood Dancers – exciting young dancers, with audience participation of the new style Asian music

Steel Sophisticated – steel pan band consisting of Vanya Reid, Alicia Brown and Westley Joseph
